Helping Seeds Grow
Picture
Let's begin with germinating a Japanese turnip named Hakurei. I planted a few seeds in some fresh top-soil on January 22, 2021. Today, January 30th, they are a little over an inch tall. They sit in a greenhouse with morning sun exposure. They are water-misted once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and finally again at night.

Why Germinate?

My experiments with seed germination this year, so far, found lettuce to be the top sprout-er, germinating in just a few days. It germinated better in a mix of topsoil and compost. Lettuce seeds in paper towels did not do as well. I found broccoli enjoyed the paper towel method, as did carrots and cucumbers. Sugar peas also did well in paper towels. Germination allows me to start the plants in the greenhouse, and as the weather warms, to transfer to outdoor gardens. Beginning early spring I will have food stuff to pick and bring inside for salads and cooking.
